For the fifth consecutive year, the Friends of the Northfield Public Library have recruited a Northfield artist to create a limited edition artwork to thank new, renewing, and lifetime members. Designing the 2009 book and membership card this year was Adriana Casillas, a junior at Northfield High School.

ImageCasillas, who first moved to Northfield from California in fourth grade, is a frequent library user. “I come to the public library for books on other cultures and on animals. My artwork often uses a photograph of a wild animal as a starting place; the end result can be realistic or more cartoon-like.” Her first published art came at an early age. “As a young girl, I was diagnosed with scoliosis and made many visits to the Shriners’ Hospital. They did not charge anything at all for the care I received, and so I was very glad to help them when they asked me to submit a design for a Christmas card.”

ImageThe daughter of Adriana Fasolino of Bon Appetit Catering in Northfield, Casillas says that she has been drawing from a very young age when she first saw Walt Disney’s animated movie, “The Lion King.” “I was inspired at first by the images. Later, after I read his biography, I was inspired by his life, how he went from nothing to being internationally known for the work he loved to do.” Casillas had another insight while visiting Disney World two years ago. “I had looked forward to this visit for so long. Then, right before we left, I tore a ligament while playing soccer. I was still able to go, but it was frustrating, because I spent the whole time in a wheel chair and could go on any rides. Still, it was wonderful to be in one of the places Walt Disney designed. I don’t regret it because I also got to see how it is for people who must view life from a wheelchair all the time. I was lucky that one month later I was able to walk.” As Casillas plans for college and beyond, travel and animals are uppermost in her mind. “I plan to be a wildlife biologist. Since lions are my favorite animal, I dream of traveling extensively in Africa and Asia.”

“Adriana has come up with a delightful design that captures the Friends commitment to young readers” says William North, president of the Friends. “It makes sense for the Friends of the Library to feature the talent and creativity of those who love the library, especially young people. We are glad to be able to give something beautiful back to our members.” At the request of the Friends, Casillas has signed each of these limited edition bookmarks, which will be given to all new, lifetime, and renewing members during this campaign.
